Home utilities

Power, water, gas and internet: how each one works here and what to ask before you sign a lease.

Power, water, gas and internet (sample image)

Each service

Power (CFE)

The contract usually stays in the owner's name. The bill comes every two months; pay in the CFE app, at a bank or in convenience stores. Heavy use moves you to a pricier rate (DAC).

Water

Set up with the local water utility. Many homes have a cistern and a pump. For drinking, people use large water jugs.

Gas

LP gas: a fixed tank refilled by a truck, or cylinders that are swapped. Order by phone or WhatsApp.

Internet

Fibre in town and the Colonia; in the jungle, satellite. Installation can take days to weeks.

When you rent, ask

  • Whose name are the utilities in?
  • Are they included in the rent, or paid separately?
  • Is there a cistern, a pump and a roof tank?
  • What internet is there, from whom and how fast?
  • Is the air conditioning inverter?
